How the Rear Emblem Connects — The License Plate Light Method

The MK6 rear LED emblem does not use a T-harness or a fuse box tap. Instead it connects directly to the license plate light circuit inside the tailgate — one of the cleanest and most reliable wiring options available on any Volkswagen. The process:

1. Open the tailgate and pull back the interior trunk liner to expose the wiring cavity behind the rear badge position
2. Locate the license plate light wiring — it runs inside the tailgate cavity and is easily identifiable
3. Connect the emblem’s red positive wire to the positive terminal of the license plate light circuit
4. Connect the black negative wire to the negative terminal or a nearby bare metal ground point
5. Feed the harness through the tailgate panel to the badge position, press the LED emblem into the mounting position until all clips engage
6. Insulate all wire connections individually with electrical tape, test illumination with the parking lights on, then refit the trunk liner

The emblem illuminates whenever the parking lights or headlights are switched on — the same activation behaviour as the license plate lights themselves. What Happens When You Combine the Front and Rear LED Emblems

Many MK6 owners who order the rear LED emblem already have the front light up emblem fitted, or order both at the same time. The combination works particularly well on the Golf MK6 because the front and rear upgrades activate on different circuits — the front on the ignition or fuse box circuit, the rear on the parking light circuit — which means the front badge illuminates whenever the engine is running and the rear badge illuminates whenever the external lights are on. The visual result at night from a distance is a car that has a lit VW roundel visible from both the front and the rear simultaneously, which is a more complete effect than either emblem achieves on its own.

MK6 GTI — Does the Red Badge Option Apply Here?
